Why should I spend any time here?
This is the place where you can find many things SU. The Network is like a hub, connecting many aspects of the University. This is a web space for intellectual discussion, networking, and information. In addition, you may find the assistance of invited industrial contacts within your field.
Who can become a participant?
This Network was created to serve the Newhouse community of people of color in their endeavors to enrich their academic and professional careers and provide assistance to others. This effort cannot be done alone in a vacuum. Toward this approach, inclusion is a more powerful means to successful networking and personal service than exclusion.
Hence, deference is extended to SU alums, students, faculty, staff, and administration. This Network is not an organization itself; but ties together resources of participating SU-based organizations, to which people of color belong. Some groups have specific membership criteria and are administered by a designated key member. Acceptance and participation into these groups are reserved and decided on a request-by-request basis.
Visitors are invited to participate - which means that visitors may not be required to have an official tie to the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications? However, visitors will be limited in choice of Newhouse groups in which they may participate. There is a base of information open to all who participate, regardless of race or anything else. It is thru this openness that we hope participants will invite leaders of industry to visit to contribute. It is, likewise, with walls that each group can also conduct business with privacy.
How does this Network work?
The Network is available to participants 24/7 through a virtual office environment. This web space is hosted by a free intranet, situated in California.
After logging in, the participant has access to all information shared with “Everyone” and specific access to information within groups to which the participant belongs. The participant may interact with all the information that can be seen.
Calendar, Contacts, and Resources are areas in which all participants may contribute; however, considerable care must be given to how the input is shared. Unfortunately, the default sharing scenario is always “Personal”. Sharing must be changed to either “Everyone” or a specific group – otherwise, the participant would only be sharing with him or herself. Finally, some web sites require granting permission prior to a participant linking to their site or content; in those cases, please forward the written consent to the Site Administrator.
Rooms and Forums are the focal points of interactivity. Here, we expect the participants’ best netiquette and respect for communication laws.
Only Site or Group Administrators can publish Knowledge Base content and Announcements.
There are Site Administrators who monitor the Network daily. Group Administrators are key participants, or organization-designated people, who monitor content, credentials, and abuse.
May I change My Account information?
Yes! Participants may change any aspect within “My Account” at any time. However, the participant must keep his or her e-mail address contact information current by submitting the e-mail change directly to the Site Administrator (keittcom@gmail.com), Failure to keep e-mail data current will (1) immediately separate the participant from all future e-mail correspondences, and (2) feature the participant’s name in Forums > “Looking for Lost Participants”. After 12 months of inactivity, the lost participant’s account will be made inactive.
Are there any rules for users?
Participants agree not to upload, transmit, distribute or otherwise publish in any Forum any material that is:
(1) libelous, defamatory, obscene, abusive, pornographic, threatening, or an invasion of privacy;
(2) an infringement of the intellectual property rights, including, but not limited to, copyrights and trademarks, of any person or entity;
(3) illegal in any way or advocates illegal activity;
(4) an advertisement or solicitation of funds, goods, or services;
(5) a message posted by a user impersonating another; or
(6) chain letters of any kind.
Can I help develop this Network?
Yes! One of the Network’s strengths is its ability to service many different people from different places with different backgrounds, all who happen to be related in some way to Syracuse University. To this end, the Network needs advisers and administrators. Please volunteer!
Can non-Newhouse people participate in this Network?
Yes, however, the deference is extended to SU alums, students, faculty, staff, and administration. This Network is not an organization itself; but ties together resources of participating SU-based organizations, to which people of color belong.
